The Trouble with Screens
Most conversations about screens in schools begin with a familiar complaint.
Children are distracted. Attention is fractured. Lessons are interrupted. Devices invite clicking, scrolling, switching, checking, glancing. Teachers are forced to manage not only the child in front of them, but the machine beside them.
All of this is real.
But it is not the deepest problem.
The deeper problem with screens is not only that they distract children from reading. It is that they have encouraged schools to think about reading in the wrong way.
The Nature of the Task
The problem was not simply that technology was overused.
It was that we misread the nature of the task.
Much of educational technology treated literacy as though the main problem were delivery: getting more material to more children, with better feedback, clearer records and faster adjustment.
Screens are very good at delivery.
They can send material instantly. They can assign exercises. They can adjust difficulty. They can record answers. They can produce dashboards, scores, progress bars, alerts and reports.
This is useful. It is also seductive.
Because once something can be delivered, measured and tracked, it begins to look as though the thing itself has been understood.
But literacy was never just a delivery problem.
The Promise of Delivery
Educational technology did not enter reading instruction modestly. It came with the confidence of a fix. Digital platforms, we were told, would personalize practice, identify gaps, supply feedback, accelerate literacy gains and make reading progress visible at scale.
In many ways, screens did what they were designed to do.
They made education more visible.
More tasks could be assigned. More responses could be recorded. More progress could be tracked. More content could be distributed at greater speed and lower cost.
These are all improvements.
In those areas.
A child struggling with a particular sound, spelling pattern, or word-recognition task may well benefit from repeated practice and immediate feedback. A teacher may gain something useful from seeing where a class is stumbling. A school may find value in tools that organize, deliver and monitor work more efficiently.
The problem is not that technology can do none of these things.
The problem is that these things began to look like literacy itself.
But access is not comprehension. Activity is not absorption. And delivery is not formation.
What Reading Requires
Reading begins with decoding.
Children must learn that letters represent sounds, that sounds form words, and that words on a page can be spoken, recognized and understood. This matters, and must be taught carefully.
But decoding is not the whole of reading.
Reading also depends on language comprehension: vocabulary, syntax, inference, attention, background knowledge, and the ability to follow a sequence.
These are not separate boxes to be ticked.
They develop together, slowly and unevenly, as children encounter language rich enough to stretch comprehension.
That is why literacy cannot be reduced to what is easiest to deliver, practice, record or measure.
The Limit of Delivery
This is where screens can mislead.
Educational technology is strongest where reading can be broken into small, repeatable parts.
A child can practice letter sounds. A program can give feedback on a spelling pattern. A platform can supply another exercise, adjust the level, record the answer and show progress.
For decoding, this may be useful.
Not sufficient. Not all the child needs. But useful.
Language comprehension is different.
It does not grow simply because more tasks are delivered, more answers are recorded, or more progress is displayed.
It grows through repeated contact with language that has enough depth, sequence and difficulty to make the child attend, remember, infer and connect.
These things can be supported.
But they cannot simply be delivered.
That is the limit of the screen.
A better platform cannot solve a problem it has misidentified.
Where Stories Belong
Stories are crucial here not because they are charming, old-fashioned, or a pleasant alternative to screens.
Stories place language under pressure. They require children to follow language across time: to remember, infer, anticipate, compare, and connect. They give vocabulary, syntax and background knowledge somewhere to work.
That is why stories are not a decorative extra in literacy.
They are one of the oldest forms of serious language practice we have.
Closing Thought
The trouble with screens is that they make a very thin idea of reading look complete.
They can show access, activity, progress and completion.
They can show that a child has answered what the platform asked.
But that is not the same as showing that vocabulary is deepening, sentence sense is strengthening, memory is holding, or inference is becoming more natural.
Technology can improve delivery. It can improve feedback. It can improve visibility.
But literacy is not, at its deepest level, a technological challenge.
It is a human one.
And because the problem was misread from the start, EdTech could never deliver the answer it promised.
